About Our Free Women's Self-Defense Program

Since 2010 we have been running a free women’s self-defense and personal safety program at Krav Maga Yashir Boston. We teach the SEPS (Situation Effective Protection System) program, that teaches individuals how to predict, identify and avoid violence, alongside a minimized self-defense system that teaches some very simple and straightforward solutions that can be used to deal with a variety of physical attacks etc. Our women’s self-defense program utilizes blended learning i.e., part of it is conducted online (the personal safety piece), with the physical part being taught at our training facility. This approach allows for the most efficient use of time i.e., you can learn the personal-safety/self-protection part at your own pace, in your own time, and once done come down to take a physical hand-on class, where you can take the knowledge, you have learned and apply it in physical scenarios. Rather than focusing on teaching “techniques”, which are quickly forgotten, we look to guide those who take our program through simple heuristics, that can help guide decision making, along with universal solutions that require little skill to apply e.g., one of the heuristics we teach is, “Nearest Weapon, Nearest Target”; if your hands are closest to the eyes, gouge the eyes, if they are closer to the groin strike/grab the groin etc. Using these simple and straightforward “rules” coupled with simple attacks and defenses, a small amount of learning can go a long way. This allows us to spend more time teaching and practicing a few things that can be applied in a multitude of settings, than having to spend a little time covering a lot of different solutions which are likely to be forgotten.

Our approach utilizes the SEPS system, to help either prevent violence from happening, or prepare individuals to deal with it. By teaching individuals the common processes that predatory individuals use, and how to identify them it is possible to avoid having to be involved in a physical altercation, however even if avoidance isn’t possible/an option, understanding that a violent situation is developing gives an individual the chance to prepare for the assault, meaning that they won’t be caught completely by surprise. This greatly increases an individual’s chances of surviving a violent and committed assault/attack.

Our physical program currently runs monthly, and is open to women and young girls aged fifteen plus (parental consent will have to be given to women aged less than eighteen at the time of the class/seminar). Although we are not graphic or sensational in the way we describe things, we do talk about subjects such as rape and sexual assault etc. It should also be noted that our goal is not about “empowerment” – though we hope that afterwards the knowledge and training you have gained does empower you – but about improving personal safety, and equipping you with the tools to defend yourself if you are ever attacked.
