Krav Maga Yashir Boston - A Unique Training Experience

Gershon Teaching Krav Maga in Israel (with Haim Zut)
There are several reasons that make training Krav Maga at Krav Maga Yashir Boston a unique experience. One of these being our close connection to Israel and Israeli instructors, allowing the Krav Maga that we teach to be both up-to-date and relevant. In Krav Maga techniques and solutions evolve as better ways of dealing with violence are developed. It is through Head Instructor, Gershon Ben Keren’s relationships with instructors and trainers in Israel, that we can ensure that the solutions we teach have been proven and shown to be effective in real-life situations. This allows those that train at Krav Maga Yashir Boston to have confidence in the solutions they train and practice within the school, something that is extremely important if you ever have to physically defend yourself i.e., doubting what you have learnt will cause a hesitancy to act, which an assailant can exploit. Gershon started to build his relationships, with Israeli and IDF instructors when he first started training and teaching Krav Maga in Israel in 1993 and has trained with many of Imi Lichtenfeld’s first generation of black belts and instructors, including Miki Assulin, Eyal Yanilov, Avi Moyal, Gabi Noah and Haim Gidon.

In 2010, Gershon was inducted into the Museum of Israeli Martial Arts, in Herzliya, Israel (Gershon's photo is the last on the top row of the banner at the top of the page). He was one of only a few Krav Maga instructors to be honored in this way, including Haim Zut, who was the first black belt, and highest ranked student under Imi Lichtenfeld. Sixteen students from Krav Maga Yashir Boston accompanied him to Israel for the ceremony. They then had the experience of training Krav Maga in Israel, along with Hisardut (Krav Maga is not the only Israeli Martial Art), under Dennis and Yaron Hanover. Gershon Ben Keren, also holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Hisardut, a system of fighting and close combat that is taught to members of Israel’s elite military units.

As well as taking students from the school to Israel to train, Gershon also brings Krav Maga and Hisardut instructors to Krav Maga Yashir Boston, to teach seminars. Past guest instructors at the school have included Miki Assulin (one of the first ten black belts in Krav Maga), Ran Steinberg (trainer to IDF special units), Roy Elghanyan (twice named Israeli Krav Maga National Champion by the chief of staff) and Gavriel Schneider (Former Head of Hisardut for the Asia Pacific Region) etc.

Bringing in high-ranking and guest instructors, allows for different aspects of Krav Maga and real-world self-defense to be promoted e.g., one instructor may emphasize the technical aspects of Krav Maga, whilst another may highlight the need for certain types of aggression training etc. The instructor team at Krav Maga Yashir Boston are committed to providing the most up-to-date and relevant solutions to violence that are out there, and this involves being open to learning from others and allowing for them to share their experiences and perspectives. One of the other things which makes training at Krav Maga Yashir Boston unique, is Gershon Ben Keren’s academic and research background as a criminologist. When Krav Maga techniques and solutions are trained at the school they are trained in context e.g., students don’t simply learn how to deal with a knife that is held to their throat, they are also taught the types of scenarios where such threats are experienced, and other components that may be present, such as the presence of others who may be involved. Violence isn’t sterile or sanitized, it happens in an environment at a certain time etc., and other factors need to be taken into account when looking at how to deal with a potentially violent incident. Our training is focused on the practical application of Krav Maga, not simply learning working through a syllabus etc. When/where relevant Gershon also includes and shares his own first-hand experiences of violence from working in the security industry.
